Legendary Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman died at 11AM PT today. Hanneman had contracted the skin tissue disease necrotizing fasciitis, most likely from a spider bite, in early 2011, and had not been touring with the band since that time. He has remained an official member of Slayer as Exodus guitarist Gary Holt took his place for the band’s live shows.

The cause of death was cited as liver failure, although it was not specified whether it was directly related to the necrotizing fasciitis. In a statement, the band wrote:

Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed. Our Brother Jeff Hanneman, May He Rest In Peace (1964 – 2013)”
