Veteran’s Smile
Helping Veterans love their smile
It is a well-known and accepted fact that there is a lack of access to dental services for our military Veterans once they transition out of active duty. Unless a Veteran is declared 100% disabled, the Veterans Administration (VA), they do not offer dental care, after having the world’s best dental care while on active duty. As a result, many of our Veterans are suffering from poor oral hygiene, which can cause systemic disease, a lack of self-esteem, and force many to retire from society.
While there are some existing programs, they are greatly underfunded, which prevent them from reaching their full potential. In addition, many in the dental profession want to provide services but cannot establish programs without adequate funding. Likewise, there are many corporate and individual donors who are interested in supporting healthcare services for veterans but do not know where and how to donate and provide support.
To address these needs and see more Veterans smile, Objective: Veterans’ Smile was born.

Stand Down Madison
in the early 1990’s, Wayne D. Horner, a Vietnam War Veteran and Veteran Service Officer, wanted to do something to positively affect local Veterans experiencing homelessness. Wayne felt as if so many of these Veterans could use the type of break offered to troops in combat needing rest and relaxation to continue their mission. Unfortunately, Wayne was not able to see his dream come to fruition due to complications from Agent Orange exposure related to his service. In 1993, several of Wayne’s fellow combat Veterans teamed together to make this vision a reality by hosting the first annual Stand Down in Madison, WI. Today, this tradition continues as Veterans and community members of south central Wisconsin organize to provide a day of relief to those struggling to exit homelessness in our area.

One Veteran suicide is too many…currently, 18 per day of our nation’s protectors take their own lives! The number has decreases from 22, but still 1 is too many! Everything is free to the Veterans because of how much they have sacrificed for this great country already. The only money Veterans need is if they want to buy a souvenir for themselves. The Veterans are accompanied by volunteer guardians. Guardians make sure the Veterans stay with the group and take care of any special needs. Guardians are responsible for paying their $500 trip fee on their own. Their fee is not covered by the donations that are collected. All Veterans and guardians interested in flying out of the Madison, WI, hub must submit an application to Badger Honor Flight. Veterans and guardians are selected for flights on a first-come, first-served basis. Exceptions are made for terminally ill Veterans. If a doctor certifies that a Veteran is terminally ill, he or she receives priority status.
